Christmas Gift for a Sister: Her Initial and Yours

She knows what you spent and she remembers last year. A two-initial monogram gives you something only you could have chosen.

Your sister has known you her whole life. That makes the Christmas gift harder, not easier: she will see straight through anything bought in a hurry. A monogram necklace gives you something specific to say.

Why a sister is the hardest name on the list

With a sister there is no polite distance to hide behind. She knows what you spent, she knows whether you thought about it, and she knows what you got her last year.

She also already owns the obvious things. Candles, a scarf, bath oils, a gift card. Not bad gifts, just gifts that could have gone to anyone and happened to end up with her.

What changes the feeling is specificity. Something that could only have been chosen for her, by someone who knows the cast of characters in her life.

Two letters that tell your story

The Two Initial Necklace joins two letters into one pendant, woven through each other rather than placed side by side. Our guide to monograms shows how the shape is built.

For a sister, the two letters open several doors:

  • Her initial and yours — the two of you, which is the whole point of having a sister.
  • Her initial and her partner's, if she has built a life with someone.
  • The initials of her children, if she is a mother.
  • Her initial and your parents' surname initial, if you want to mark where you both come from.

If you want her to cry at the table, choose her letter and yours. Nothing else on the list carries that weight for the price.

For a younger sister and an older sister

A younger sister often wants jewelry she can wear every day, layered with the thin chains she already owns. The 40 cm chain (16 in) sits high and layers well over a longer pendant.

An older sister, especially one with children and little patience for fuss, tends to want one piece she can put on without thinking. The 45 cm chain (18 in) does that. It rests on the collarbone and works with a round neck, a shirt or a knit.

Our necklace length chart shows how each length falls on the body.

Gold-tone or silver-tone

You have an advantage here that most gift-buyers do not: you have seen her get dressed for twenty years. Think of the earrings she reaches for, the ring she never removes.

Warm and yellow means gold-tone. White and bright means silver-tone. Both are stainless steel, meant to be worn daily, in the shower and at the gym.

A gift that works when you are far apart

Many sisters no longer live in the same city, or the same country. The Christmas when you do not share a house is the one where a gift has to do more work.

A necklace with both your initials is a quiet way of saying the distance has not changed anything. She puts it on in another time zone and you are, briefly, in the room.

What to write on the card

Keep it short and name the letters. “Mine and yours. Same as always.” Or, if your family runs drier: “Two letters, so you cannot forget who put up with you first.”

Each piece is made to order with the letters you choose, so order in good time for Christmas.

If you also need something for her birthday

Many sisters have birthdays in January and February, which is a cruel arrangement for anyone buying two gifts in six weeks. A monogram solves Christmas and leaves the birthday free for something lighter.

Our guide to initial necklaces as gifts covers the rest of your list, including the harder names.
