Necklace length chart and care
A 40 cm chain sits at the base of the neck, 45 cm on the collarbone, 50 cm just below. These are approximate: your neckline and the pendant change where it falls.
Necklace length chart
| Length | Where it sits | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|
| 40 cm · 15.7 in | Base of the neck, just above the collarbone | A pendant close to the neck, or the top layer of a stack |
| 45 cm · 17.7 in | On the collarbone | Every day, with almost any neckline |
| 50 cm · 19.7 in | A little below the collarbone | Over a collar, or as the lower layer of a stack |
Usual jewelers’ conventions, approximate. To be sure, measure a necklace you already love, clasp included.

Care, returns and questions
- What is the standard necklace length?
The standard necklace length is 18 inches, about 45 cm, which sits on the collarbone. Choose 40 cm to keep the pendant close to the neck, 50 cm to wear it lower.
- What is the average necklace length for a woman?
The average necklace length for a woman is 18 inches, about 45 cm, at the collarbone. A 40 cm chain (15.7 in) sits higher, a 50 cm chain (19.7 in) a little lower.
- How long is an 18 inch necklace?
An 18 inch necklace measures about 45.7 cm and sits on the collarbone. Our chains convert as 40 cm ≈ 15.7 in, 45 cm ≈ 17.7 in and 50 cm ≈ 19.7 in.
- Does stainless steel tarnish?
Stainless steel does not tarnish the way silver does. Its gold-tone or silver-tone finish can soften over time where the pendant rubs.
- Does stainless steel jewelry turn your skin green?
Stainless steel does not usually turn skin green the way copper or brass can. Skin reacts differently from one person to another: if you notice any irritation, take the necklace off.
- Is stainless steel jewelry waterproof?
Stainless steel resists water, but its finish lasts longer when kept dry. Take the necklace off to shower, swim or exercise: water, soap, perfume and chlorine wear the finish.
- How do I clean a stainless steel necklace?
Clean a stainless steel necklace by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. If needed, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, then rinse and dry it right away. Avoid abrasives and jewelry dips.
- Is stainless steel good for jewelry?
Stainless steel is a good choice for jewelry worn every day: it is strong and resists rust. Only the finish asks for a little care, as explained above.
- What if a letter doesn’t match my preview?

- Can I return a personalized necklace?
