Christmas Gift for a Wife: Her Letter and Yours

When the obvious gifts are used up, give something that could only exist because of your life together. Two letters, joined in one pendant.

Gold-tone two-initial monogram necklace worn at the collarbone

After a few Christmases together, the easy gifts are gone. She has the perfume, the robe, the weekend away. A monogram necklace works because it is about the two of you, not about a category of present.

The problem with year seven

Early on, almost anything lands. You are still learning each other, and the surprise does half the work.

Later it gets harder. She buys her own clothes and knows her own taste better than you do. The obvious categories are used up, and the gift risks becoming a transaction: something expensive enough to show effort, generic enough to be safe.

The way out is not to spend more. It is to give something that could only exist because of your particular life together.

Her letter and yours, joined

The Two Initial Necklace weaves two letters into one pendant. One letter passes through the other, so they cannot be read separately. Our guide to monograms shows how the shape is built.

For a wife, the obvious pair is her initial and yours. It is also the right one. A monogram is one of the few jewelry forms that can hold two people without saying so out loud.

If you want something less about the marriage and more about the family you made:

  • The initials of your two children.
  • Her initial and the first child's, if there is only one.
  • Her first and last initial, for a piece that is hers alone.

Couples who already wear wedding rings often prefer the children's letters. The ring says the one thing; the necklace can say the other.

Why she will actually wear it

Plenty of Christmas jewelry is worn twice and then lives in a drawer. Usually because it is too much: too big, too bright, too clearly an occasion piece.

A two-initial monogram is small, has no stones and no colour, and reads as a shape rather than a message. It goes to work, to the school run and to dinner without changing what she is wearing.

That is the test worth applying to any jewelry gift: not whether it impresses on Christmas morning, but whether it is still on her in February.

Gold-tone or silver-tone

Look at her wedding and engagement rings first, since those never come off. Match the necklace to them and it will layer with everything else she owns.

Warm and yellow means gold-tone. White and bright means silver-tone. Both are stainless steel, made for daily wear.

The length to choose

The 45 cm chain (18 in) is the safe choice and the one most wives reach for. It rests on the collarbone and sits above a round neck or a knit.

The 40 cm chain (16 in) sits closer to the throat, for open collars and V-necks, and layers neatly under a longer chain she already wears. The 50 cm chain (20 in) falls lower, over a jumper or a shirt.

If she already wears a necklace daily, measure it end to end while she is in the shower. Our necklace length chart shows how each length falls.

What to write

This is the part most people skip, and it is the part she will keep. Name the letters and say why you chose them.

“Yours and mine, in one shape. Twelve years.” That is more than enough. The card usually outlives the wrapping paper.

Each piece is made to order with the letters you choose, so order in good time for Christmas.

If you also need an anniversary gift

A monogram is a Christmas gift that does not collide with an anniversary. It is not flowers, not a weekend, not a repeat of what you gave in spring.

And if there is a first Christmas involved rather than a tenth, our piece on a first Christmas together takes a different angle on the same two letters.
